A unique mark on the skin, apparent at birth or shortly thereafter. There are two types:

  1. Stemming from a malformation of blood vessels that create a reddish patch of skin from pink to dark purple, which may be flat or raised.
  2. Stemming from the overproduction of pigment (melanin). These will appear from light brown to dark black.
